Located in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, the Gola del Furlo State Nature Reserve covers 8.895 acres hectares of woods, meadows, uncontaminated peaks and freshwaters. Established in 2001, it is crossed by the Candigliano River, which winds through the rocky walls of the Gorge, creating a landscape of outstanding beauty.
The services offered by the Reserve include guided tours, birdwatching, educational activities, conferences, courses and internships. In Aqualagna, there is also the Natural History Museum, which houses a geo-paleontological and naturalistic collection, as well as the observation and monitoring of royal eagle nests on the wall of Mount Paganuccio – they can also be observed with a live webcam available in the museum.
Flora and fauna
The Reserve has great naturalistic richness. The vegetation consists mainly of oak woods with downy oaks (Quercus pubescens), black hornbeams (Ostrya carpinifolia), ash (Fraxinus ornus), maples, and sorb trees, together with the typical species of riparian and fluvial environments, pastures and bushes.
In the Reserve, there are many birds of prey such as golden eagles, Montagu’s harriers, peregrine falcons, eagle-owls, blue rock thrushes, nuthatches, crag martins, alpine swifts, and the red-billed chough. Mammal species include wildcats, wolves, hedgehogs, skunks, roe deers, fallow deers, and wild boars. Among the reptiles, there are four-lined snakes and common vipers.
