Hemp Ecomuseum

The Ecomuseum of the “Culture of Hemp Processing” is in the village of San Bernardo (Carmagnola). Established in 1998, it covers one of the oldest traditions of the surrounding area.
Under a long roof, tools and ancient contraptions are displayed in a very logical sequence; all the different steps of hemp processing come back to life, thanks to the “Cordai di San Bernardo” Historical Group which, as a true custodian of this centuries-old tradition, offers practical demonstrations working the raw material as well as the finished product.
Visitors can thus witness the carding, spinning and twisting of the ropes.
The signs of this ancient activity are also still visible even outside the museum, in the urban architecture and in the very features of the surrounding landscape, shaped by streams, ditches and hemp macerators.
