This WWF Oasis in the Maremma area around Grosseto, protects a wetland of huge natural value and due to its position, it offers shelter to thousands of species of migratory birds. The lagoon is separated from the sea to the west and east by two strips of land (Giannella and Feniglia) and to the west by Mount Argentario.
The lagoon is constantly threatened by extinction, therefore a part of it is currently under the protection of the WWF.
FLORA
The vegetation is that of the Mediterranean scrub, with mastic trees, myrtle, strawberry trees, and coastal pine forests. Carpets of glasswort stretch along the edges of the lagoon, while internally, there are poplar, ash, cork and elm woods.
FAUNA
The lagoon is a wetland of international importance. Many species of birds nest or pass through on a regular basis, including black-winged stilts, pink flamingos, white herons, ospreys, Eurasian spoonbills, avocets, cormorants and several species of ducks.
The waters of the lagoon are rich in valuable fish such as the sea bass, the gilt-head bream, the flathead grey mullet, and many eels.
