This lake is inside the Gargano National Park, in the Municipality of Lesina, and covers an area of 2.300 acres. The dune of Bosco Isola stands between the lake and the Adriatic Sea, but the former reaches the coast via three canals: Saint Andrea, Chiappara, and Acquarotta. Some other streams provide a fair supply of freshwater to the lake.

The lake features a wetland area with thick reeds and typical brackish lagoons. It is an ideal environment for many species of birds such as cormorants, egrets, spoonbills, marsh harriers, black-winged stilts, slender-billed gulls, and kingfishers.
