Marais Nature Reserve

This 71.6-acre reserve can be found in the municipality of La Salle and Morgex, at an altitude between 2.916 and 2.985 ft. This area includes a short stretch of the Dora Baltea River and its alluvial plain. The actual reserve was established in 1992.

The best times to visit are the migratory seasons (spring and autumn), highly recommended for birdwatchers. In fact, the area offers shelter and protection to species linked to humid environments, such as mallards, moorhens, white wagtails, cuckoos, marsh warblers, and Eurasian blackcaps.

The small size of the reserve has allowed the creation of just one footpath for visitors, which still offers the chance of enjoying the enchanted pristine nature while observing a remarkable variety of different habitats, plants, and animals.

BOTANICAL FEATURES

The vegetation is typical of environments rich in water. In the woods, there are mainly grey alders (Alnus incana), white willow (Salix alba), and black poplars (Populus nigra).

In the undergrowth, there’s dogwood (Cornus sanguinea) and common meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria). The reed bed is made of common reed (Phragmites australis), canary grass (Typhoides arundinacea), bulrush (Typha latifolia), and tussock-sedge (Carex paniculata).
