Migration Museum and Ornithological Observatory

Located in Ventotene, this museum is the first, among the very few in Europe, to feature the last 20 years of research of scientists and scholars. The actual building – known as the “traffic lights” – was built during WWII and has been recently renovated.
As Italy, and the Mediterranean Sea can be acknowledged as the perfect passage between Europe and Africa, migratory birds are abundant, while in this museum their species, habits and actual movements are thoroughly documented and researched. For instance, state-of-the-art displays and dioramas tell the story of very light migration of birds flying from North Africa to Ventotene, or the bearing techniques used by species that fly only during the day throughout the year. A terrace overlooking the sea allows direct observation of the birds.
