Monte Carcaci Oriented Nature Reserve
This post is also available in: Italiano (Italian)
This reserve covers an area of 3.550 acres. Mount Carcaci is made of limestone rocks, different species of limestone and marlstone, as well as clayey soils deposited in the geological and climatic eras of the Mediterranean. The nature of the soil has contributed to shaping the vegetal landscape, expressed on a series of different environments such as wetlands, natural woods, scrubs, grasslands, and rocky areas.
The undergrowth is very rich and hosts a large quantity of species typical of the Sicilian woods, small trees and shrubs. There are European wild pear trees, hawthorns, manna ashes, prickly asparagus, butcher’s broom and Peruvian pepper trees; the evergreen shrub features laurel-like leaves and fruits, although toxic for humans but edible for birds.
