Lake Conza Oasis is located in a Site of Community Importance (SIC IT8040007) in the municipality of Conza della Campania (Av). It is also a special protecting area (ZPS IT8040007) and an important site for the rest of the migratory birds on the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic route:
It was created thanks to the blocking of Ofanto river. As a matter of fact, a dam was constructed and the oasis created is the widest wet area of Campania with its 800 hectares of extension. It includes a hygrophilous wood, grazing lands and steppe habitats. The vegetation of the oasis is characterised by a Quercetum pubescentis, a holm oak wood, where there are steppe meadows with Bromo erectus, to which are associated wild oats (Avena fatua), Rubus ulmifolius, elders (Sambucus nigra), hawthorns (Crataegus monogyna), blackthorns (Prunus spinosa), rose hips (Rosa canina); some spontaneous orchids bloom in this area.
White willows (Salix alba), tamarisks (Tameix spp.), alders (Alnus spp.) and italic poplars(Populus italica) are present in the wood too.
The swamp vegetation is characterised by reeds (Phragmites australis), Typha spp. and thread-leaved water-crowfeet (Ranunculus trichophyllus).
There is a visitor centre with meeting rooms, observation huts, a natural trail, a green classroom to teach in the open air, resting areas and teaching laboratories in the Oasis. The path is suitable also for disabled people.
