This reserve is one of the most important protected areas in the Province of Palermo. It was established in 2000 to protect the interesting wildlife community, the typical vegetation and the caves of remarkable speleological and paleontological interest.
Within the reserve, there are several natural environments: rocky area, the valley with woods, grassland and garrigue areas, and marshland along the course of the local streams.
The natural woods inside the reserve are made of holm oaks, cork oaks and deciduous trees, mixed with field maples and Acer monspessolanum.
The undergrowth is made of bushes belonging to the rosaceae family, typical of the Mediterranean scrub, such as almond pear trees and evergreen roses, hawthorns, heather, spiny broom, and Cytisus villosus.
On the peaks, visitors can admire bushes of holly together with holm oaks, while the open areas feature spring cyclamens and pink peonies.
The open and semi-rupestrian areas are colonized by shrubs of mastic trees and dwarf palms, spurges, and olive trees.
The prairie, which in the rockiest and sunny portions takes on the appearance of a steppe, shows large tufts of Ampelodesmos.
