The Park of Castello dell’Aquila, green lung of the city, develops around the Spanish Fort. Also known as Castello Cinquecentesco, the fort was built during Spanish occupation in the first half of 16th century, but it was never used for war purposes. It was restored in the second half of the 20th century and now holds exhibitions and meetings. Unfortunately, it cannot be visited because of the violent earthquake of 2009.
The vast park hosts many species of trees and shrubs; conifers like Cedrus spp. and Cupressus spp. and broad-leaved trees like Tilia spp. and Platanus spp.
Within the park there is the Auditorium del Parco, or Auditorium del Castello, created by Claudio Abbado and designed by Renzo Piano as a symbol of solidarity to the people of L’Aquila.
