Parco del Lavino is named after the Lavino river, whose waters are sulphuric and have a wonderful colour between light blue and turquoise. It is located just outside Pescara, in the municipality of Scafa, and it is a protected and equipped natural area, of 40 hectares. River Lavino finds its springs in Vallone di Santo Spirito, the northern are of Massiccio della Majella and, after Scafa, it gets mixed withe the Pescara river.
Lavino presents many lakes, with pure and fresh water, whose intense colour is cause by the presence of seaweeds and dissolved sulphites with a varied and rich vegetation. All around, grow white willows, black poplars, broom trees, downy oaks, locusts, coronillas, hawthorns and, in the vicinities of water, piante swamp plants like reeds and caneso; many animals live there, kingfishers, grey wagtails, moorhens, i goldfinches and nightingales together with foxes, hedgehogs and martens.
It is possible to reach the river on foot with a 15 minutes walk on an easy path. At the entrance of the park there is an area which is used as playground for children and with wooden benches and tables to make picnics in the open air. The area has no fencing, so the access is free and available for the whole day longè. To make guided tours, there are volunteers of the local circle of Legambiente or of associations like Majellando (marcello@majellando.it; tel. 349 6648985)
