Principi di Spadafora winery has been owned by the Princes of Spadafora for several generations. Its founder, Don Pietro dei Principi di Spadafora, had actually inherited it from his uncle Michele De Stefani, a farmer and breeder of racehorses.
Located in Monreale, in the province of Palermo, this estate is spread over gentle hills between 820 and 1.312 ft above sea level, covering some 445 acres partly cultivated with vineyards (234 acres) and olive groves (50 acres).
The grapes grown include Catarratto, Grillo, Inzolia, and Chardonnay varieties (for white wines), and Syrah, Cabernet, Merlot, and Nero d’Avola (for red wines).
All the raw materials must come directly from the farm; all the production phases take place within the company itself, paying the utmost attention to obtaining high-quality products with modern grape growing criteria and local vinification in the cellars.
During an earthquake in 1968, the company suffered some serious damage, but Don Pietro promptly took care of the reconstruction and redevelopment of the company; he also re-evaluated the native vines and introduced several allochthonous varieties, thus giving birth to very high-quality wines.
Today, Principi di Spadafora produces one of the best Italian Syrahs – “Sole dei Padri”, grown on the highest hills of the estate, facing north-north-west.
