The territory of Mount Amiata includes several nature reserves, like Monte Labbro, Pescinello, Bosco Rocconi, Poggio all’Olmo, S.S.Trinità, Monte Penna, and Monte Amiata Fauna Park.

Bosco di Rocconi Nature Reserve covers 916 acres in the municipalities of Roccalbegna and Semproniano (Gr), along the course of the Albegna River. Part of the nature reserve is owned by the WWF, which established the homonymous Oasis accessible from the State Road 323, at km 49.

The Reserve includes a sparsely populated area, mainly composed of thick woods, especially in the northern area, while in the southern part there are of olive groves, green meadows and small uncultivated pastures. There are many natural holes and caves, among which the most important is Crepaccio di Rocconi

The local fauna includes rare species of diurnal birds of prey, such as the short-toed snake eagle and the lanner falcon, some turtles, and many animals included in the “red list” of species protected by the Bern Convention. Wolves can be hardly ever found.
