San Miniato is a small medieval town in the heart of Tuscany, which boasts the production of white truffles which is also of the largest in the world; an 88.89-oz specimen was donated to the president of the United States, in 1954.
The white truffle of these hills is the Tuber magnatum, nicknamed “the Food of the Kings” – it’s the most valuable underground mushroom which can be found in a very limited number of places.
The tradition of the San Miniato truffle dates back to the Middle Ages, thanks to the activity of truffle hunters. Since 1969, the National White Truffle Exhibition has been held in San Miniato (at the end of October): on that occasion, the town turns itself into an irresistible “laboratory of taste”.
Over the years, the festival has grown bigger and bigger, also hosting other local products such as wines, cheese, and meat. During the festival, special awards are given to the biggest truffle and the oldest hunters, while truffle mongers showcase their products; refreshment ant tasting opportunities are abundant, as well as the wide offer of accommodation at historic local farmhouses.
