This park is a protected area on the Sibillini Mountains massifs, between the regions of Marche and Umbria, and falling into four provinces: Ascoli Piceno, Fermo, Macerata, and Perugia.
It covers an area of approximately 180 acres, mainly on mountain terrain. The predominant landscape is that of the limestone massif of the Apennine range, which acts as a link between the softer Tuscan-Emilian part and the heights of Abruzzo, assuming severe and steep features.
From the main axis of the Apennine ridge, an eastern and a western slope descend. The first is characterized by a great variety of landscapes and natural environments. The valley bottoms of rivers and streams are divided into narrow and impressive gorges (such as the impressive “Gole dell’Infernaccio”), created by telluric activities and erosion.
Higher up, several kinds of wood (especially beech woods) surround the Apennine valleys with a prevalent north-south trend. The western side slopes gently towards Umbria Region, with a series of high-altitude depressions: the famous “Piani di Castelluccio”.
The rich flora is mainly made of beautiful Edelweiss (Leontopodium), alpine pasqueflowers, Orchids, chestnuts (Castanea sativa), beeches (Fagus), and white maples.
