Treja Valley Park

Valle del Treja Regional Park, established in 1982, covers an area of about 1.600 acres in the medium stretch of the Treja River, a right tributary of the Tiber. It belongs to the Municipalities of Mazzano Romano and Calcata, respectively in the Province of Rome and Viterbo.
The park features ravines, vertical walls carved into volcanic rocks by the river waters – surrounded by gentle, cultivated elevations – vegetable gardens, vineyards, olive groves and hazel groves. The course of the river is interrupted by suggestive waterfalls – Monte Gelato probably the most striking one, located next to an ancient water mill. More than a half of the area is covered by woods, mostly open to the public. Most common plants are oak woods, such as Turkey oaks and downy oaks, maples, hornbeams and common hazels.
Along the water course, hygrophilous species prevail, such as willows, poplars and alders, while the most thermophilic species grow in the ravines, such as holm oaks and European nettle trees.
