The Oasis of Valle Averto is located in the Municipality of Campagna Lupia, in the province of Venice. The area, managed by the WWF, has been acknowledged as a Site of Community Importance (SIC IT3250030) and as a Special Protection Area (SPA IT3250046).
It is a typical fishing valley of the Venetian lagoon, the only one where hunting is banned, covering ca. 495 acres. The soil of alluvial origin receives both salt and fresh water, a most unique feature that has generated different habitats: the hygrophilic wood, the wet meadows, channels and freshwater ponds, brackish water lakes, sandbanks, embankments and hedges, reeds, sedges and rushes, sweet and brackish marshes, as well as wet pastures.
The oasis is home to several species of birds: coots, mallards, teals, shovelers, pintails, pochards, ferruginous ducks, purple herons, bitterns, Eurasian bitterns, mute swans, wild geese, cormorants, seagulls, flamingos, and ruddy shelducks. Birds of prey include ospreys, hen harriers, sparrow hawks, black kites, and buzzards.
There are also mammals such as badgers, skunks, stone martens, foxes, and small rodents.
The flora includes large expanses of Phragmites australis (reed) and in the softer waters Typha spp. (cattail), Juncus spp. (rush), Carex spp. (sedges), Nymphaea spp. (water lily).
Along the exploration routes, visitors may come across a typical Renaissance house used for temporary exhibitions and conferences, as well as an ancient observation tower.
