First Stage – Liguria
The Via Francigena was an ancient road and pilgrim route running from France to Rome and Apulia, eventually reaching the ports of embarkation for the Holy Land. In Liguria, this road ideally starts in the eastern corner of it, namely in the ancient village of Groppodalosio in Valdantena.
Then the road goes past the town, crossing the waterway on a medieval stone bridge. The latter was built in a single arch and represents one of the major attractions of the route in Lunigiana area. Right there, visitors can leave their cars and proceed on foot towards southern Liguria and then Tuscany. The road is literally plunged among classic Mediterranean vegetation, olive, and cypress trees.
Further down the road, the landscape begins to soften and travelers can briefly stop to visit Pieve di Sorano, the abbey of San Caprasio, the village of Bibola, and Pieve di Sant’Andrea in Sarzana.
