Villa Brignole Sale

The origin of this majestic building can be traced back to Giulio Sale – he bought it in 1580 and turned it into a cultural centre, and a summer residence for important people of that time. In 1882, the Villa was bought by the Congregation of the Marcelline Sisters who set up a school which still there today.
The Italian garden has a square layout with tall trees, palms and magnolias in the centre of the flower beds which have replaced the original bulbous plants. The marble statues and the authentic brick pavement – arranged in a herringbone pattern – add a very special touch to the whole place.
The park is spread over three levels: the driveway to the lemon orchard, the sloping lawn, and a flat area. The latter features a tree-lined path on which an original decoration mask for a pond can be seen.
At the end of the walkways, there are four caves which show traces of primitive shell decorations.
On Saturday, 26 May 2018, the Italian garden of Villa Duchessa di Galliera, in Voltri, found the floral medallions commissioned by Maria Brignole Sale at the end of the 19th century.
In fact, in 1880, the Duchess of Galliera wanted some elaborate floral medallions (technically called “flower mosaic”) for her garden in the Villa di Voltri.
Now, thanks to an original photo, the Landscape System and Friends Associations of the Villa Duchessa di Galliera, helped by ASTer gardeners – funded by Terme di Genova – were able to reconstruct the original design of the flower mosaics created by Giuseppe Rovelli. It’s like travelling back to 1880 and the Victorian Garden times.
