Villa Cipressi Park

Villa Cipressi is a complex of several buildings and gardens built over a long spell of time, between 1400 and 1800. The residence, which belonged to the local Serponti family (in 1163), then to Count Isimbardi, and eventually to the Andreossis (in 1864), is one of the most interesting architectural testament of the late Renaissance, with precious neoclassical additions, clearly visible in the facade on the lake. Villa Cipressi, whose main access used to be from that very body of water, is embedded in a park mostly designed in XIX century and made of sloping terraces with rows of cypress trees. There are many Mediterranean and exotic species (conveniently tagged) which prefer a mild climate and found here their perfect habitat in a beautiful botanical garden.

The buildings and the park have been recently restored. Today, Villa Cipressi is a hotel and has been included in the circuit of “Grandi Giardini Italiani”.

The garden

The park lies on a panoramic spot in Varenna, overlooking the lake. All the typical elements of lush vegetation gardens, architectural grandeur, and prominent panoramic positions can be found right there.
Despite a long period of neglect, the park has managed to retain its main features, indeed, the most important elements have survived and become even more impressive, such as the luxuriant agaves, cacti and several other succulent plants which a part of a true, valuable collection, along with, wisteria, cheesewood, Monterey cypresses, and a large magnolia overlooking the dock.
