Villa Collio

Villa Collio was actually built where a lodge of the Collio family used to be (it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1799). In 1812, Giambattista Collio thus asked the architect-painter Giuseppe Lucatelli to design and built the new structure with a neo-Palladian style.

The complex has a square plan, built on two levels and enclosed by a mixed masonry curtainwall. It is accessed through a vestibule that opens between two arcades, perpendicular to the main staircase of the villa, centrally located and overlooking the entire area. On the sides of the structure, there are two balustrades along the terrace built on a portico.

In front of the villa, there is a chapel and an identical and specular building that identifies the Italian garden, divided into three longitudinal stripes: the central part connects the portal with the access stairway, while the lateral ones host a formal garden with flower beds of boxwood (Buxus sempervirens) and old roses, with paths, pools, fountains, stone seats, and niches with cherubs.

This green area leads to the caves below the upper terrace, also rich in statues and assorted decorations.

In the estate, there is also an English garden that covers the southern and eastern areas, accessible via a path that starts from the lower portal.
Another interesting feature is the long avenue of plane trees (Platanus orientalis) that climbs the hill reaching a circle of cypresses (Cupressus sempervirens): right there, there is a brick obelisk dating back to 1884, erected in honour of Giambatista Collio.
