The park of Villa Comunale di Foggia, also known as “Karol Wojtyla city park” (honouring Pope John Paul II), is in the centre of Foggia, not that far from the railway station and the access roads to the city.
The construction of the public garden began in January 1820 and ended four months later, when the “Superintendent of Capitanata Nicola Intonti” promoted the creation of a large green area as a place of rest and recreation for the citizens of Foggia.
The park, with its rectangular plan, covers about 12 acres and looks entirely flat but in the easternmost part, known as the “Boschetto”, designed in 1822 by Felice Giordano, a renowned Neapolitan gardener of the past. Several mulberry plants (Morus spp.) and other species belonging to the local flora were planted, while several decorations were later added such as statues, fountains and walkways.
Eventually, a perimeter iron fence was added around the park, while an imposing pronaos would identify the main entrance; As a final touch, a botanical garden was created inside the park, featuring more than 500 plant species.
During the Second World War, the park suffered some major damage, especially regarding the vegetation, (now scarcer than the past), the pronaos and the statues; nonetheless, some mulberry trees managed to survive such ordeal.
During the 1950 reconstruction, several new specimens of plane trees (Platanus x hybrida), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus spp.), and Japanese cheesewood (Pittosporum tobira) were planted inside the park.
Today, the gardens can be accessed through a large clearing that leads to the main avenue; the latter is connected to several paths leading to a parterre with palm trees and shrubs, which alternate with rows of trees and gentle lawns.
