Villa Duchessa di Galliera

The Duchess of Galliera was the last noble owner of this property. According to her last will, she wanted it to be known as “Villa Brignole-Sale”, thus honoring the same family who had owned it for such a long time in the past. In fact, the villa, its lush vegetation, and the adjacent wood called “Paraxo”, was bought in 1675 by Gio Francesco Brignole Sale from the daughters of Nicolò Mandillo. Right after the purchase, the new owner had the main building, and the park enlarged and improved.

THE PARK AND THE FAUNA

The park, served by some 12 miles of roads and paths, is made of three section: a garden, a wood, and a lawn.
The garden stretches to the very foot of the Belvedere hill and feature some sloping terraces with roses and an Italian style section. There, visitors can admire camellias, palm trees, plantains, magnolias, cypresses, English yews, agaves, camphor trees (Cinnamon camphora), bay laurel (Laurus nobilis), wondrous European horse-chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum), and strawberry trees (Arbutus unedo).
The wood is rich of oaks (Quercus ilex), sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa), maritime pines (Pinus pinaster), beeches (Fagus sylvatica), and English oaks (Quercus robur).

A large enclosure houses Maltese fallow deers, deers, and goats which were introduced in the park in 1962.
