The park of Villa Durazzo Pallavicini in Pegli is acknowledged as one of the most original romantic parks in the world.
Commissioned by the marquis Ignazio Pallavicini, it was designed and created by Michele Canzio in 1840. Canzio was the set designer at Carlo Felice local theatre.
The construction took six years and the result was not only a romantic park, but also a most peculiar theatrical itinerary made of different “sets” linked by unique narrative: the Viale Classico, the Coffee House, the Arc de Triomphe, the House of the Hermit, the Caves, the Great Lake with the Chinese Pagoda, the Temple of Diana, the Roman Bridge, the Flora Gardens, and the Rose Gazebo were painstakingly created and plunged into beautiful landscapes full of plants and eye-catching examples of contemporary architecture. The leitmotif a philosophical and theatrical approach.
The constant changes of scenes, the wise combinations of architectural and natural elements and, above all, the enthralling narrative lead, still make each an exciting experience. The park walkways are actually divided in the “theatrical” acts, each one consisting of four different scenes with lakes, streams, waterfalls, garden buildings, furnishings, and rare plants. All these elements are wisely arranged as casual glimpses with “visual deceptions” capable of absorbing their surroundings and stretching the boundaries of this “magic” place.
There is no lack of plants of great botanical and ornamental value, take, for instance, the monumental camphor trees flanked by Lebanese cedars located on the bank of the lake, the collection of exotic palm trees, the ancient araucarias and cork, many Lady Banks’ roses and cherry laurels. The collection of ancient camellias stands out among all the others – some of these specimens are over one hundred years old, attracting with their blossoms a lot of visitors and enthusiasts every spring.
