Villa Giulia Park

Villa Giulia was the first public garden opened in Palermo. The villa was built in 1778 by the architect Niccolò Palma and dedicated to the wife of the Spanish Viceroy, Donna Giulia d’Avalos.

Today, the park is a public facility adjacent to the Botanical Garden, and it’s considered among the most beautiful in Italy; it features the classic architecture of an Italian garden, with sharp geometric layouts: symmetrical avenues intersect each other in two main directions, orthogonal and diagonal so as to form a second square, diagonal to the first, with a central circular space with the splendid fountain of Ignazio Morabitti, surrounded by four neoclassical exedras.

The small fishponds and the aviaries with exotic birds are very popular attractions for the children, together with the large, well-kept green spaces.

Johann Wolfgang Goethe once described it as “the most wonderful corner of the earth” and right there he used to relax and read “Homer” during his holidays in Palermo.
