Villa Negrotto Cambiaso Park

Upon strolling down the main avenue of this park, the wondrous Liberty style greenhouse welcomes visitors in its extremely well-kept original splendour. It was built by Marquise Matilde Negrotto Cambiaso in 1931 and designed by Lamberto Cusani – a true enthusiast of XIX century architecture, English style gardens, glass and iron.
Every year, at the end of April, the Municipality of Arenzano organizes the “Florarte” (http://www.florartearenzano.com) event right inside this beautiful greenhouse – some masterpieces of local artists are thus exhibited along with magnificent floral arrangements.
Starting the visit in the greenhouse, visitors can then access the garden built by the famous architect Luigi Rovelli – the same who took care of “Villa Brignole Park Sale Duchessa di Galliera” in Genoa and Voltri.
Tasked by Marquise Luisa Sauli Pallavicino with the restoration of the villa (used today as the town hall), in 1880 Rovelli remodelled it as a small castle while introducing some elements of typical English gardens like a pond, a stream, and a waterfall. He actually managed to create a series of small sloping pools, giving the park an overall more natural look. The most striking result of his endeavour is probably the small cave by the sea, which is also another entrance to the villa.
The garden combines acclaimed architectural-design values with a remarkable collection of plants. There we can find many rare species like bald cypresses, Erytrina crista-galli, Cephalotaxus, and Cryptomeria (Elegans and Giant Tuia varieties). Some specimens have grown extremely big in the course of the centuries, like the huge and truly impressive Lebanon cedar.
Peacocks can be found roaming in the garden, along with some other types of birds (this very area is also part of the Beigua Regional Park, where many migrating birds can be usually seen).
Today, the original rooms of the marquise are used by the local music band, and the park is a property of the Municipality which has recently opened an area dedicated to very young visitors.
