Villa Pisani or La Barbariga

Excerpt from: “Gardens of Veneto Villas”, by Camilla Zanarotti, Silvana Editoriale.
The first historical information dates back to the late sixteenth century. The villa has undergone transformations and extensions over the years and, in the final decades of the XVIII century, Pietro Vittore Pisani added two long neo-classical arcaded wings to the main building. In the early nineteenth century, Chiara Pisani, wife of Giovanni Barbarigo, decided to transform the surrounding area into an English garden and commissioned the architect Gianantonio Selva, one of the most prominent exponents of the neo-classical style in the Veneto. Countess Pisani, after the early death of her only son, Alvise, retired here and devised the gardens to give employment to the many labourers in search of work.
The large estate soon became famous, also for its hare hunts, which came to an end with large dinners beneath the arcades to which all the local residents were invited. The meticulous layout of the plants reflects the typical stylistic canons of the Romantic garden.
The gardens have come down to us with their original beauty largely intact and retain many of their typical elements as some of the most attractive landscaped gardens in the Veneto.
