Villa Serego

Villa Serego, or Sarego, is a Venetian noble abode designed by the architect Andrea Palladio in 1565: since 1996, it’s been part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

The original owner was Marcantonio Serego from Verona. There is very little and scattered information about the actual construction works; the villa was built only in a small portion of the estate when compared to the huge original project included by Palladio in the “Four Books of Architecture” (1570). In particular, less than half of the rectangular courtyard was actually created in the northern section of the available area.

Thanks to several XVIII-century documents by Muttoni and Bertotti Scamozzi, it looks like the actual building covers half of the rectangular courtyard, around which the residential spaces designed by Palladio would have been created on three sides; the fourth side, corresponding to the current eastern wing and without any inner spaces, would have made a sort of a diaphragm: beyond it, there should have been a semicircular garden with an exedra closed by a colonnade.
