Volpaia Castle

The current Volpaia farm was born in the IX century as a fortified village between two small valleys, on the border between Florence and Siena, in Radda (Chianti). It was actually built by the Volpaia family from Florence, appreciated producers of professional tools for scholars and researchers in the mid-Reinassance.
This village is one of its kind in the Chianti area, not only because it’s the best-preserved examples of a fortified rural village, but also thanks to its 100% vocation to wine. Painstakingly preserved throughout the centuries – the original structure dates back to 1100 – it is surrounded by a most evocative landscape and the whole estate is now under the government protection, as requested by Giovannella Stianti, the daughter of Raffaello who built the very farm in 1966.
The winemaking cellar is located in a deconsecrated church, the barrels and barriques are housed in the ancient basements of “Commenda di Sant’Eufrosino” – a church-tower designed by Michelozzo and the most iconic building in Volpai. The bottling area can be found in the halls of a patrician building, while all the company departments are connected to each other by an invisible “wine pipeline” underground.
Furthermore, the entire core facility is located in one of the most beautiful and fascinating landscapes of the region, among dense woods and vineyards with perfect and harmonious geometries.
Near Castle, there are soaring cypresses (Cupressus sempervirens L. ), olive trees, (Olea europaea L. ), and other plants and shrub species typical of those hills.
For years, the passionate rose collector Carlo Mascheroni – Giovannella’s husband – has chosen the most beautiful varieties to decorate the whole village. In the garden of the villa, a circular pergola hosts more than 100 different varieties of roses: in May, June and July their most fragrant blooming is absolutely spectacular.
