The manufacturing of Navelli saffron and its collection are made by hand and then little bags with the spice are produced in order to sell it on the market. To obtain a kilo of saffron threads, it is necessary to collect nearly 200,000 flowers.
THE TOWN
The town of saffron has kept its medieval structure, which is dominated by the Santucci palace, and so there are narrow streets crossing the town and many historical buildings, such as Palazzo Onofri, Porta Villotta and Palazzo Cappa with the San Pasquale Chapel.
The oldest church of Navelli, Santa Maria in Cerulis, is located outside the village. It is a building of the 11th century, which presents still its ancient colonnade, which was used once as lodging for shepherds passing by with their herds.
The festival of chickpeas and saffron takes place on the third weekend of August and it includes tastings of typical local products and there is also the characteristic Palio degli Asini.
