It was established 2002 and it includes 22 municipalities, mainly of the piedmont area, between the provinces of Benevento and Avellino and it covers a surface of 14,870.34 ha.
Partenio’s mountain chain is part of the Southern Appennines, it is about 30 km long and starts at Taburno Mountain (North-West) and ends at the Picentini Mountains (South-East).
The mountain chain is composed of three ridges of different dimensions with an elongation from East to West; they are separated by deep valley and torrential watercourses.
There are numerous caves on the territory.
The 70% of the Park’s territory presents a soil principally formed by materials of volcanic origins (pyroclastic material) from the volcanic complex Somma-Vesuvius, while the remaining 30% is formed by soils of various origins.
These differences between the sub-layers allow not only to have varied forests, flora and fauna inside the park, but also to recreate unique landscapes.
The fossils present on the territory are numerous such as stromatolites and radiolarias.
The climate of the park is variable because it is by the sea.
The Partenio park territory is covered by forests like chestnut tree woods or beech tree ones.
The park’s fauna is varied. Among the reptiles there are not only geckos and green lizards, but also serpents like the dark-green ones or the Aesculapian snakes and “cervoni”. The birds comprehend various species, about 70, which nidify on the territory in differents environments.
The mammals are mainly nocturnal animals and include around thirty species like wolfs, moles, hedgehogs, foxes, badgers, bats, weasels, martens and different insectivorous micro-mammals.
Partenio park is a place where cultural, artistic and traditional elements are united.
The local products are numerous such as the priests’ chestnuts, “Andrite” hazelnuts, Padri Benedettini of Montevergine liquor, the Fiano di Avellino (a DOCG wine) and truffle.
