Scatolone Tomato from Bolsena

This type of tomato is a local variety found on the banks of Lake Bolsena. It became popular right after the Second World War, while it had already been exhibited at a local show in Bolsena, in 1930.
Its origin is uncertain: some people think it’s just a mutation of local tomato, others speak of a farmer importing it in the past. What’s undoubtedly true is the fact that his tomato has found its perfect place to grow, and develop its excellent organoleptic features.
Around 1970, it was produced over 50 acres of land, but then the intense cultivation was replaced by more sensible and thorough protection of this special species. That is to say, maintaining and spreading its cultivation is currently organized and supervised according to a thorough rural development plan.
Between 1990 and 1995, a local Fruit and Vegetable Panel, supported by the Municipality and Province authorities, exhibited the local produce in a square in front of the harbor.
