Murta Rose Garden

Murta Rose Garden is on the hills of Val Polcevera (Genoa), inside a small monumental cemetery surrounded by walls built in 1835. This place was neglected and literally abandoned for a long time. In 2018, the “Quelli che a Trasta ci stanno bene” Association decided to recover it and build a rose garden. Therefore, clearing brambles and brushwood, those volunteers planted a collection of ancient Chinese roses, tea roses and other varieties – like the Noisette – among statues, ancient crosses and many architectural elements of the Art Nouveau period, Three well-known rodologists Rita Oliva, Nicoletta Campanella (Nicla Edizioni) and Sergio Scudo, from the “S’orrosa nursery” contributed to these choices.
The above-mentioned Association usually organizes tea parties (there’s a clear connection between herbal drinks and Chine roses) to gather resources for maintaining this wondrous rose garden. The same Association has recently published the book “L’ora del Tè” (“Tea Time”), published by Sagep. The proceeds from the sale will be entirely used to manage the garden as well.
The rose garden can be visited by appointment, and guided tours are available from the end of April until June.

The very aim of this rose garden is to make the towns of Trasta and Murta a tourist destination for enthusiasts and to give Val Polcevera some true beauty cared for by a community of dedicated enthusiasts, gardeners, scholar, and historians. The project is part of a larger one in the same area, which includes the reconstruction of the bridge over the Ciliegio River in Trasta; that’s an ancient seventeenth-century bridge collapsed after a flood, in 2014. A very narrow track which leads straight to the old cemetery, while connecting Trasta and Murta, is going to be rebuilt again soon.
