Parco Massari

Parco Massari is the widest of Ferrara’s public gardens: its surface is of 4 hectares, and is name after the adjacent palace built at the end of the 16th century. It was owned by the counts Massari in the 20th century, who modified it into an English style garden rich in statues, bushes and other plants. The design of flowerbeds is the one of the 19th century and most of the trees are centuries old: among them, two ciders from Lebanon (Cedrus libani) at the entrance, some yews (Taxus baccata), a majestic ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) and a giant English Oak (Quercus robur) at the entrance of Corso Ercole I d’Este.
Once, the park was completely surrounded by a high boundary wall, of which remain now only two of the seven entrances, the principal one towards Corso Porta Mare and a second one facing corso Ercole I d’Este. Next to the first access, a hedges’ labyrinth was present, but it was eliminated in the next years because of safety problems.
Since 1936 the park belongs to the municipality of Ferrara, which transformed it into a public park.
