Pala Winery

This winery has been located in the historic centre of Seridania, in the province of Cagliari, since 1950. Pala company actually includes six estates, each one with its own peculiarities.
The first one is “Is Crabilis”, in Ussana: it’s a limestone-sandy hill entirely covered by vines (Vitis vinifera L.). The translated toponym refers to an ancient shelter for goats, which in the Neolithic Period used to be an actual human settlement, as evidenced by the ancient tools found during several excavations.
The soils are mostly clayey-calcareous, while when going uphill they gradually become looser and sandier, but always gravelly: at the top, a large part of the valley below can be clearly seen.
Both white grape varieties such as “Vermentino” and “Nuragus” are grown right here, in the sector facing south-east, while red varieties like “Carignano”, “Monica”, and “Cannonau” are exposed South and North-west.
The second estate, “Tanca S’Arai”, covers 37 acres and owes part of its name to the “tanche”: large fenced plots of land used for both agriculture and animal breeding; the second part of its name – “S’Arai” – clearly evokes the intense ploughing activities.
This land is exposed South and features a clayey soil, which then becomes sandy and calcareous. “Bovale”, “Cannonau”, and “Carignano” vines grow here. This area represents the company “cru”, and still follows the ancient tradition of planting and cultivating vines with several coexisting species, which give their unique contribution to the resulting wine variety.
The third estate is that of “Benatzu Coloru”: a sandy slope with a peculiar pastel shade, which extends over 12 acres facing South. The soil, which is particularly clayey, hosts rows and rows of “Monica” vines.
“Costa is Arangus” is the fourth vineyard, which grows around an ancient Romanesque church, and features a peculiar limestone soil with clayey and marly features.
The vineyard, facing South-West, hosts “Vermentino” and a small section of “Syrah” grape.
