The Oriented Natural Reserve of Fiumedinisi and Monte Scuderi is located on the Ionian side of the Peloritani Mountain Ridge, in the province of Messina; it encompasses the municipalities of Nizza, San Piero Niceto, and Fiumedinisi. Established towards the end of 1998, it is currently managed by Azienda Foreste.
This portion of the territory includes rivers and valleys crossed by seasonal streams. Among those of greater importance, there are the Valley of the Hermits and Valle dell’Acqua Menta (“Water-Mint” Valley); the latter’s name evokes its abundant presence of mint.
The local flora includes downy oaks, chestnuts, walnuts, mulberries, and tree heather.
Above 2.624 ft, there are groves of sycamore maples, holly and laurel.
There is no shortage of water and streams, which favour black poplars, willows, ashes, field elms, and buckthorns. The undergrowth is thick with oleanders, tamarisks and spurges.
