Pollenza Estate

This estate was sold by Count Brachetti-Peretti to the Mattei Antici Princes more than twenty years ago and features a beautiful XVI century building designed by the architect Giuliano da Sangallo. The complex is in the evocative area of the Tolentino hills, in the province of Macerata, and spreads over 494 acres, 124 of which are planted with vines.
As soon as the property was purchased, a snowfall destroyed the vineyard, which in those days featured a farming structure not that suitable for high-quality productions.
Thanks to the advice of the Marquis Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga, the owner of the San Leonardo winery in Trentino, the most suitable varieties of grapes were then planted in the Pollenza estate, namely Bordeaux vines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot.
Today, the vineyards are located some 15 miles from the sea and 22 miles from the Sibillini Mountains, at altitudes between 360 and 492 ft above sea level. The first international vines date back to 1996, while previous cultivation of native vines dates back to more than 40 years ago. The terroir varies from medium to deep, with a medium texture with clay and gravel.
The training system of the vines is the renowned “counter-espalier, with the spurred cordon farming technique for red vines and the guyot for white varieties.
Harvesting takes place by hand, using wooden boxes, between the end of August and the first half of September – quality is a paramount priority for this winemaking company.
