Thermal baths of Bormio

The healing properties of the thermal waters of Bormio have been known since ancient times. Pliny the Elder mentioned them in the I century in his “Natural History”, while Cassiodorus, at the beginning of the VI century, spoke about the thermal springs of Bormio highly recommending this most unique facility.

Over the centuries, this spa has always represented an important asset for well-being.
Its waters flow from the Rhaetian Alps and have an average temperature between 100.4 and 105.8 F° (38 C° and 41 C°), with maximum peaks in winter-spring, and minimum ones during the summer. All the water sources are near a tectonic area of regional importance, the “Zebru fracture” which marks the border between the crystalline substrate and sedimentary rocks.

Around the springs, there are concretions of considerable thickness and size, featuring some remarkable radioactivity which gives the waters their peculiar characteristics.

The thermal center in Bormio is made of two sections: Bagni Vecchi and Bagni Nuovi.
The Old Baths (Bagni Vecchi) have six sectors with different areas for relaxing, regenerating, detoxifying, cleansing inside a cave, invigorating and “rebirth” – they’re all set into an evocative and suggestive environment, truly unique in the whole wide world. They include:

the Roman Baths – known since I BC;
the Baths of the Archduchess – so-called in honor of the Archduchess of Austria who used to spend the summer holidays in Bormio;
the Sweat Cave of San Martino – which leads to one of the springs in the heart of the mountain; the Medieval Baths;
the Imperial Baths;
the panoramic swimming pool – stretching over the “Magnifica Terra” and “Bagni Nuovi”.

The New Baths (Bagni Nuovi) are made of four sectors:

Giardini di Venere – with regenerating facilities;
Grotta di Nettuno – offering a detoxifying experience;
Bagni di Giove – with aquatonic/revitalizing treatments;
The Baths of Hercules – featuring a relaxing area.
