Via Francigena

The third portion of the Via Francigena (the ancient road and pilgrim route running from France to Rome and Apulia, to ports of embarkation for the Holy Land) runs through the Grossetano area, in the Tuscan Maremma, or along the Via Cassia towards Lazio Region. Here, it intersects the Formone torrent, and climbs the ridge along a paved road. It goes past “Le Conie” farmhouses and continues all the way up to the fortress of Radicofani. Then, it descends along the old Via Cassia – one of the most beautiful and exciting stretches in the entire route.
Eventually reaching the Rigo Stream Valley – and after crossing a bridge where the water meets the Paglia River – you’re back on Via Francigena. Following a paved road for a few kilometers, you can eventually enter Lazio Region and proceed on a dirt track that offers magnificent views of the Paglia Valley. The town of Proceno marks the end of this itinerary.
