Villa Serra

Villa Serra and its park stand on a patch of land which used to be called “Cà dè Galli” or “Sul Piano”. At the beginning of the XVIII century, this place was already a very popular location among nobles and aristocrats, in fact, several abodes and “villas” had already been built and were eventually acquired by the Pinelli family. In 1811, Agostino Pinelli decided to renovate his villa, then it was sold to marquis Serra and, in 1850, another new owner – marquis Orso – wanted to turn it into a majestic à la mode complex. Entrepreneur, painter and amateur architect, of Milanese origin, marquis Carlo Cusani was tasked with this grand project, and he soon proved himself the very man for the job.
Cusani and marquis Orso Serra started the construction in 1851 and spent ten years to complete their project.
Some 22-acre park was thus created, radically changing the original agricultural landscape into a more sophisticated English style garden. The latter was abundantly decorated with all the typical elements, like ponds, streams, tall trees, and winding walkways.
The XVIII century building was then revisited with a Neo-Gothic style and annexed to a Tudor style villa and a medieval tower very similar to that designed by Michele Canzio in the Durazzo Pallavicini park in Pegli.

In 1992, during the official Christopher Columbus celebrations in Genoa – on the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America – the park was reopened to the public after a restoration that had brought it back to its original grandeur.

From 1995 to 2004, the works continued with the restoration of the main building and an adjacent service structure. A tower-like structure was thus the result of a major modification of what used to be the Pinelli family’s stables.
